Guatemala is famous for it’s ancient Mayan Culture and over the years archeologists have made many discoveries about this civilization and still continue to do so.

Antigua is a famous city where you can learn about the conquest of the continent.

At Lake Atitlán you can see the breathtaking natural beauty that Guatemala has to offer. There are also many more highlights to Guatemala such as nature reserves, beaches, cuisine, traditions as well as the indigenous cultures and their lifestyles, which are a distinctive and importwnt aspect to the country’s identity.

Quetzaltenango, known as Xela (Shayla) to most travelers and locals.

Around Xela there are many Mayan villages, such as:

  • Salcajá: This town is known for its church, This church is the first one in Central America. Church of San Jacinto, La Ermita de Slacajá or La Conquistadora, founded in 1524. This small village is the principal productor of a special liquor, this one is called Caldo de Frutas. It is made by fermentation of different kinds of fruits or the season fruits, it is like a wine, sweet and strong but delicious. Another drink which originates from the old continent but which was adapted and perfected in Guatemala is the eggnog. This beverage is handmade from a recipe of sugar, egg yolks, nutmeg, cinnamon and rum.

  • San Andrés Xecul is a uniquely beautiful and colorful church which you will not see anywhere else in the world. The church is adorned with images and beautiful yellows and oranges which appear to make it come alive.

You will see a little yellow church uphill
  • Almolonga and Zunil are two neighboring towns near Xela. These towns are the principal agricultural exporters to Central America and they grow onions, carrots, beets, cilantro, potatoes, cauliflower and cabbage.  All year round, they work to hard to distribute their produce to the rest of Central America. So, if you are interested in agriculture, this is the perfect place to learn about this process.

  • If you love nature, you are going to love the (Name?) waterfall which is about two and a half hours away from Xela.  Another reason to love it is because it is a secluded spot of great natural beauty with an air of magic as it is isolated from the usual noise, pollution and tourist hustle and bustle. I always ask myself, why there are so few tourists for such a beautiful location? The reason for this is that it is owned by the local community and they have only recently considered promoting it as a tourist destination. So, with Travel & Health, take advantage of this magical place while it remains off the traditional tourist map.
Waterfalls in Guatemala
These waterfalls, noted as some of the highest in Guatemala and Central America, are located on the slopes of the Tajumulco volcano.
  • The black sand beaches of Champerico, Tulate, Tilapa and Ocos are only about two and half hours away and there you can enjoy sea food along with a different culture and lifestyle. The beaches are un-spoilt by big developments along shore line but you can find a place to stay and be in contact with the ocean, tasting the food and of course drinking the local beer.
Beaches in Guatemala

Guatemala is located between Pacific and Atlantic ocean.
  • Forty minutes from from Xela you will find a small volcano with a lagoon in its crater. The Chicabal volcano and lake are considered one of the most sacred ecological sites in the Mayan Cosmo-Vision. The sites are used for carrying out rituals and ceremonies, especially praying for rain. This picturesque volcano mixes Mayan-Mam spirituality and stunning mountain scenery with the volcano’s mysterious crater lake and its mystical cloud forest.
