Tour of Churches (Salcajá y San Andrés Xecul)
La Hermita de Salcajá is the first church established in Central America. Originates from the time of the Spanish Conquest when the objective of Catholic Spain was to covert the conquered people to Christianity. The first step to doing this was to build the church. The first statue of a Virgin Mary brought from the Old World (Spain) resides in the church.
Strong beverages of Salcajá
“Caldo de frutas” is a traditional and delicious sweet wine made by fermenting seasonal fruits with rum over many months. Another drink which originates from the Old World but which was adapted and perfected in Guatemala is eggnog. The drink is prepared from a recipe of sugar, egg yolks, nutmeg, cinnamon and rum.
San Andrés Xecul is a uniquely beautiful and colorful church which you will not see anywhere else in the world. The church is adorned with images and beautiful yellows and oranges which appear to make it come alive.
